Abiding Savior Receives $75,000 Grant for a Makerspace

Abiding Savior Lutheran School Receives $75,000 Grant

(St. Louis, Mo) September 12, 2019 - Abiding Savior Lutheran School in south St. Louis County, received a $75,000 grant from the Lutheran Foundation of St. Louis to transform a computer lab into a Makerspace where students will participate in hands-on, self-directed, exploratory learning in science, technology, engineering, art and math (STEAM).

“Makerspaces give students a great opportunity to learn in a 21st century way by creating things, collaborating with each other and problem solving with modern technology,” said Assistant Principal and Makerspace Director, Sarah Donnelly. “We are very excited to engage our students in new ways of learning not only core subjects, but also opening doors for them to explore engineering with 3d printers, computer programing, woodworking, Lego robotics, photography and videography, as well as many other STEAM activities.”

“Makerspaces are increasingly being looked to as a method for engaging learners in creative, higher-order problem-solving through hands-on design, construction, and iteration. Ultimately, the interdisciplinary and empowering nature of these Makerspaces can help prepare youth for a future we can’t yet imagine,” as reported in the New Media Consortium Horizon Report.

The Makerspace at Abiding Savior Lutheran School will be fully functional by December 2019. An open house for the public will be held on November 5th from 6-8pm to preview the space. Visit aslsonline.org for more information.
